Cellulite, also known as the ‘Orange Peel Effect’, is known as the dimply skin that appears mostly on the upper thighs, buttocks, abdomen and arms of almost more that 90% of women. Cellulite affects women in a greater proportion due to our typical fat distribution and connective tissue, but it also affects an estimated 10% of men.
The true cause
Cellulite is caused by weakened fibrous bands that run from skin to muscle through the fat tissue. When these fibrous bands lose strength or are compressed by larger fat cells (adipocytes) it creates a downward pull on the skin, resulting in the dimpled appearance.
Cellulite is not a symptom of obesity or unhealthy lifestyle, but is considered an aesthetic concern with the following contributing factors:
· Genetics: inherited, poor connective tissue
· Sedentary Lifestyle
· Smoking
· Reduced physical activity
· Unhealthy diet
While some factors cannot be changed, there are a few homecare and in-clinic solutions that you can do to prevent the degree of cellulite from increasing, and to improve the appearance thereof.
Homecare
· Increasing fresh fruit and vegetable consumption
· Reducing salt and saturated fat consumption
· Staying hydrated
· Daily dry skin brushing
· Avoid sitting for long period of time
· Wearing restrictive clothing that may limit blood flow
· Exercise to attain muscle tone
In Clinic Treatment options
· Lymphatic drainage treatments
· Sound Wave & Vibration therapy (ACO’s BTL X-Wave)
Oscillating mechanical energy is introduced into the body, inducing vibration in the connective tissue. The tissue mechanically relaxes and stretches, and the released energy of mechanical oscillation initiates physiological processes that improve the integrity of the skin For example, increased blood circulation, strengthening of fibrous bands
· Heat & Radiofrequency
The BTL Exilis machine has the ability to create volumetric heat induction which disrupts old collagen fibers and initiates the process of new collagen formation. When the desired temperature is reached, fat cells are disrupted and removed via the process of apoptosis. This leads to visible improvement in skin tightening and fat reduction.
